Air Conditioner Repair and Servicing FAQs

If your air conditioner stops working, the first thing to check is your thermostat.

  1. Check that it’s on
  2. Try changing the temperature to see if it turns on
  3. See if the temperature near the thermostat is cooling than everywhere else. If so, it may be registering your indoor temperature incorrectly
  4. Make sure your thermostat has batteries, is clean, and is in good repair/condition
  5. If the thermostat is working properly, you should check your breaker box next. Air conditioners require a lot of power and can easily trip a breaker

If your A/C is running but it’s not blowing cold air, what does that mean? It could be any number of possible issues. Start by checking your air filter. If the filter is old, replace it with a new one.

If that doesn’t solve the problem, you’ll probably need to call an HVAC technician because the remaining issues require some technical expertise. Possible causes include everything from low refrigerant to a faulty condenser coil to leaky ducts to a busted compressor.

Good question – and it’s tough to answer this one without having an A/C technician look at your unit. The main question is: how old is your current air conditioner? With good maintenance, your A/C should last about ten to twenty years.

That’s a wide range, so there are additional factors to consider. Has your A/C been cooling your house efficiently? Have you noticed your energy bill rising? If so, it could indicate declining efficiency which might mean it’s time to replace it.

Ultimately, we recommend having an experienced HVAC expert inspect your air conditioner to determine if you should repair or replace it.

The most common “repair” is replacing your filter. You should do this every three months to ensure optimal performance. However, you might not consider this a repair, as it’s a part of routine maintenance.

Other common A/C repairs include thermostat issues, refrigerant leaks, and evaporator and condenser coil issues.
