How Does a Heat Pump Work?

This electrical device operates by circulating refrigerant between a couple of heat exchanger coils.

  1. In one of the coils, the refrigerant goes through an evaporation process and absorbs heat.
  2. The refrigerant is then pushed and compressed through the other coil, where the second process of condensation takes place.
  3. If the internal thermometer of your heat pump indicates that the inside of your home requires heat, it will be released inside. Otherwise, it’s sent outside, which keeps the inside of your home cool.
  4. If it breaks down, it will switch to emergency (auxiliary) heating, which tells the system to use your furnace instead.

Should You Get a Heat Pump Installed?

When you’re thinking about installing a new heating system, you have a few options. If you’ve been using a furnace for most of your life, you may wonder if adding a heat pump can deliver the performance you expect. Heat pumps are a great choice for many homes in the Pacific Northwest, but not all.

Heat pumps give off a gentler heat at a lower temperature than what a furnaces push. The heat isn’t as harsh when it comes out of your vents, while still It can maintaining your desired temperatures.

At Multnomah Heating, Inc., all of our heat pumps are attached to a furnace. Furnaces are used year-round because they push the air through your ductwork.

We recommend them in these types of circumstances:

  • Well-insulated homes: Heat pumps function best in moderate temperatures as opposed to extremes. With high-quality insulation, you make its job easier and allow it to operate more efficiently.
  • All-electric homes: Many people want to eliminate natural gas consumption, and a heat pump gives them an efficient HVAC option that can run on electricity.
  • Homeowners looking to pay lower utility costs: Heat pumps generally have lower operating costs because they move heat rather than generate it, making them more energy-efficient than conventional heating systems.
